Nicomachean Ethics; Politics; Poetics; On Interpretation

In his major work, Nicomachean Ethics, Aristotle explores the nature of ethical virtue and the path to achieving the good life. He introduces the concept of the "golden mean," where virtue lies between excess and deficiency, and emphasizes the importance of developing good character through habit and reason. Aristotle argues that true happiness (eudaimonia) is achieved through a life of virtuous activity in accordance with reason, and he examines various virtues and vices, their roles in human life, and the importance of practical wisdom (phronesis).

Aristotle’s Politics builds on the ideas from Nicomachean Ethics, focusing on the nature of political communities and the organization of the ideal state. Aristotle examines different forms of government, including monarchy, aristocracy, and polity (a balanced form of democracy), and discusses the role of citizens and the purpose of the state. He argues that the best state is one that promotes the common good and cultivates virtue among its citizens.

In Poetics, Aristotle analyzes the nature and purpose of dramatic literature, particularly tragedy. He outlines the key elements of tragedy, including plot, character, and diction, and introduces the concept of "catharsis," the emotional purging experienced by the audience. Aristotle’s work provides a foundational theory of drama, emphasizing the importance of a well-constructed plot and the role of imitation (mimesis) in art.

On Interpretation, also known as Peri Hermeneias, deals with the theory of language and logic. Aristotle examines the relationship between language and reality, focusing on how words and sentences can represent concepts and convey meaning. He introduces key ideas about propositions, truth, and the nature of meaning, laying the groundwork for the study of semantics.
